Popular beaches in Chania
Chania Prefecture is famous for its marvellous beaches. Not only the crystal clear sea, but also the landscapes are breathtaking. Some beaches in Chania combine tranquility and accessibility, making them ideal for visiting with kids and family. Agioi Apostoloi Beach
It is only 400m from the house so there is no need for a car to get there. There are many small bays where you can enjoy a swim in the sea at any time. In the area you can find beach bars and restaurants where you can have refreshments, snacks or food from early morning until late at night.
Marathi Beach
Marathi is located in Akrotiri about 17 km east of the city of Chania. Because of its southern orientation it is usually calm and serene compared to the other northern coasts of Crete. It has two beautiful beaches, with fine sand and shallow water, ideal for families with children. The beaches are separated by a small harbor and its pier. They are quite organized and with all the necessary amenities.
Seitan Limania
Or Seitan Ports. You will find it on the northeast side of the Akrotiri peninsula in western Crete, 20 kilometers from the city of Chania, there is a beach different from all others.
Strips of sea penetrate between the steep rocky shores of Akrotiri creating small bays. One of them is the well-hidden beach. You cannot approach the beach with a car. You have to walk for a few meters, so make sure to wear sports shoes.
Balos Lagoon (Gramvousa - Balos)
The beach of Balos and the island of Gramvousa are located on the northwestern tip of Crete, and is definitely on of the most famous beaches in Chania and Greece in General.
Balos is the exotic lagoon beach that forms between the peninsula of Gramvousa and Cape “Tigani”. Gramvousa or “Imeri Gramvousa” is one of the two islands just opposite the lagoon of Balos, a little further north there is another small island called “Agria (Wild) Gramvousa”.
In Balos and Gramvousa you can take a cruise ship from the port of Kissamos, while only in Balos lagoon you can go on your own, driving up to a point and then walking.
Elafonisi Beach
Elafonissi beach is such a popular destination in the prefecture of Chania, and a top of the top things to do / excursion from all over Crete. It is located in the southwest end of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, about 70km from the city of Chania. It is something like an island and a peninsula, because in order to reach the island you have to walk through the water.
What characterizes the beach of Elafonisi and makes it such an exotic place, is the shallow turquoise water of the sea, which at a point looks like a lagoon, and certainly the fine white sand, pinkish at several spots because of the crushed shell powder.
Falassarna Beach
Falassarna is located on the west side of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, about 53 kilometers from the city of Chania.
It is one of the best beaches in Chania and the whole Crete.
Crystal clear waters, turquoise sea and fine golden sand are all the elements for making this place exceptional.
There are a lot of beach bars and restaurants in the whole area of Falassarna, as well as hotels and a supermarket.
